applied image
processing
Warfighters need to know what is happening all around them
and the military assets they control, and a variety of image
processing systems from GE Intelligent Platforms can enable
just that. Our situational awareness subsystems are found on
virtually every type of military platform, including armored
vehicles, aircraft, remote unmanned platforms, and security
and surveillance installations.
Our subsystems can provide real-time 360° situational aware-
ness through high-resolution panoramic video feeds from as
many as 16 cameras. These subsystems provide an intuitive,
operator-friendly interface that incorporates a virtual camera
that can be panned or zoomed with either joystick or touch-
screen interfaces. The virtual camera concept eliminates the
critical time that would be lost by moving a real camera into
position. The subsystem also operates with a wide array of
physical sensor positions and orientations.
The video perspective afforded by the camera array affords
a very high typical horizontal resolution of about 7,000 pixels.
This provides much greater resolving power than fish-eye lens
systems, and also provides a more realistic image of the area
under surveillance by preserving the intuitive spatial relation-
ships of objects. Images are aligned without distortion, leaving
straight lines straight when the operator views the image on
the display.
The use of multiple cameras provides real-time monitoring
of an area much larger than any single sensor system can
provide. GE’s ADEPT5000 Multi-Target Video Tracker can provide
automatic moving target detection and metadata tagging
in the video stream anywhere within the 360° horizon. The
subsystems can interface with any type of video-style
sensor, including thermal imagers, and
can be used with analog video (CCIR/
RS170) as well as digital video interfaces.
GE recognizes that size, weight and
power (SWaP) must be conserved in
many platforms in which situational
awareness systems are deployed.
Therefore, we designed our subsystems
so that a single display device can
manage multiple video input streams
that provide the widest possible
area of coverage.
The subsystems employ simple calibration and alignment
algorithms. They can be operated with images covering any
available waveband, and can be coupled with a cued or inde-
pendent high-resolution steerable sensor. Our real-time Image
Fusion technology can meld full-frame, multi-resolution images
streaming from visible and infrared cameras to provide an
enhanced image for operators even under sub-optimal viewing
conditions. This intelligent subsystem affords higher detail and
contrast than one sensor technology alone might provide, thus
giving the operator a higher level of information content. The
image processing subsystem can be divided into two modes.
Data Extraction can provide the detection of events in the field
of view, while Visualization offers the presentation of multiple
video images and information from the Data Extraction process.
Future tracking subsystems may be expected to face even
tighter SWaP constraints in certain platforms, such as UAVs. For
these applications, tracking subsystems may drop certain non-
critical functionalities in exchange for dramatically reduced
SWaP specifications in addition to greater cost-effectiveness.
Another possible future development could be toward develop-
ment of entire 360° situational awareness systems as package
products to further ensure seamless integration between
subsystems.
GE Intelligent Platforms 360° situational awareness subsys-
tems are available for deployment in either fixed security
installations where an industrial level of environmental
performance is required or in mobile military vehicle or similar
applications that require full-military, rugged, conduction-
cooled environmental performance.
